New York Department of Sanitation Unveils Hybrid Electric Refuse Truck Featuring ISE Series Hybrid Electric Propulsion Technology

NEW YORK, NY, May 28, 2009 — ISE Corporation (ISE) announced today that the City of New York Department of Sanitation (DSNY) unveiled the first of three hybrid electric refuse trucks powered by ISE's industry-leading series hybrid electric propulsion system. ISE has partnered with Crane Carrier Company (CCC) to provide the modular hybrid drive system and integration support for the three vehicles for pilot evaluation and testing in the city of New York. DSNY will be operating, testing, and evaluating the vehicles. Tests with the first vehicle are expected to commence later in June of this year.

"We are delighted to partner with ISE to provide these new, clean propulsion additions to DSNY's Hybrid Vehicle fleet," said Glenn A. Pochocki II, CCC VP of Sales and Marketing. "The series electric hybrid rear loader is the first of its kind in the refuse and heavy truck market, with a rated GVWR of 72,000 lbs capacity. ISE's series electric hybrid technology will stretch the life of the vehicle's brake system, reduce down time and maintenance expenses, and raise vehicle fuel economy by increasing miles traveled per gallon of diesel fuel consumed," Pochocki stated. "We believe hybrid electric drive train technologies will become a necessity in the near future for the heavy truck market segment, and in partnership with ISE we are ready to support both our nation's and our customers' continued efforts to improve heavy equipment fuel efficiencies and reduce oil imports, while helping to minimize diesel exhaust gas emission impacts on the environment."

The DSNY hybrid pilot vehicles utilize ISE's hybrid electric drive system which is self-contained in three separate modules that are easily mounted on board the truck chassis. The hybrid drive cabinet with ultracapacitor energy storage and overall system controls, together with the engine driven generator assembly, are mounted behind the cab. The electric traction motor is mounted between the frame rails of the truck chassis and takes the place of the conventional transmission in the vehicle. ISE's proprietary ultracapacitor packs store energy recovered from frequent braking cycles experienced by the refuse collection vehicles during normal operation. The refuse vehicles are also equipped with ISE's onboard Remote Diagnostics System (RDS), which includes GPS and allows for real time performance monitoring through a web-based interface.

The series electric hybrid system architecture results in improved fuel economy, lower energy consumption and emissions, resulting in cleaner neighborhoods. Additional benefits include no mechanical transmission, quiet operation, and with integrated energy storage, brake wear is significantly reduced. Series hybrid electric systems offer the potential to operate accessories such as air conditioning and hydraulics in all-electric mode, without the need to run the diesel engine. Series hybrid electric drive provides a pathway to battery dominant vehicles, which can be operated in zero emission, all electric mode. ISE's series hybrid electric vehicle is also capable of providing emergency backup power and could eventually have a plug-in feature enabling "Vehicle to Grid" capability. The components used in ISE's hybrid propulsion system have demonstrated high reliability with a high track record demonstrated in more than 200 vehicles with over 9 million miles of accumulated driving.

"ISE is excited to be working with DSNY and CCC to deliver state-of-the-art hybrid propulsion technology," said Rick Sander, ISE President and CEO. "New York is a very enthusiastic and strong supporter of clean technology and has taken a leading role in deploying clean, low emission, and fuel efficient fleets. ISE is proud to take part in this major milestone demonstrating both the economic and environmental benefits of hybrid electric vehicles in the commercial truck market."
