ISE Corp's Commitment to Air Quality Certified by the California Air Resources Board
SAN DIEGO -- (Marketwire -- March 26, 2010) -- California-based ISE Corp, a wholly owned subsidiary of ISE Limited (TSX: ISE), announced today that it has received 2010 certification for its gasoline hybrid-electric drive system from the California Air Resources Board (CARB). This is the first engine certification issued in 2010 by CARB in the Hybrid Urban Bus category.
Kevin Stone, ISE's Director of Applications Engineering, stated, "The 2010 ISE Gasoline Hybrid Urban Bus meets the new emissions requirements without the need for CNG fueling infrastructure, particulate filters, urea tanks or selective catalyst reduction (SCR) systems. ISE incorporates a gasoline engine, with a traditional catalytic converter, into our proprietary hybrid system that has accumulated over 12 million miles in service. This enables us to offer a vehicle with a proven track record that surpasses the emissions standards and has the best fuel efficiency in its class."
Because the ISE gasoline hybrid-electric drive system does not require complex aftertreatment systems, transit agencies benefit as a result of reduced maintenance and lower operations costs.
Jane Warner, CEO of the American Lung Association in California, stated, "A major focus of our current efforts is reducing diesel soot from trucks, buses, and ports, and we are pleased to have ISE's hybrid-electric technology supporting these efforts."
Alex Bernasconi, ISE's Sr. VP of Sales and Marketing, commented, "Certification by CARB not only sets our technology apart from the competition, but it also supports one of our goals as a clean tech business. ISE continues to innovate in ways that contribute to reducing harmful emissions such as oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and particulate matter (PM), and improving air quality."
ISE's technology and product roadmap runs parallel to one of the goals of CARB, which is to "provide innovative approaches for complying with air pollution rules and regulations." CARB is one of six organizations under the umbrella of the California Environmental Protection Agency authorized to adopt vehicle emission reduction standards, rules, and regulations to reach state ambient air quality standards at the earliest practicable date.
Kevin Stone added, "Reducing PM levels is particularly important in improving overall air quality. "PM10" refers to particulate matter particles that have an aerodynamic diameter of 10 microns or smaller, which is much smaller than the diameter of a human hair. PM10 is responsible for worsening many respiratory illnesses and may even cause early death in people with existing heart and lung disease. ISE's gasoline hybrid-electric drive system has a particulate output that is less than conventional diesel systems -- in some cases by as much as 50% -- which has us moving in a very positive direction toward the reduction of PM10."
